2 New Challenges!! Such Fun!

I know. I know. More Challenges. What can I say? I'm a glutton for punishment. Like I could say no to these??? Not a chance!

The first is the Japanese Literature Challenge hosted by the lovely Bellezza!! It starts today and goes through January 30th. The object is to read 3 pieces of Japanese Literature (of any genre) and post about them on your blog. She has some WONDERFUL prizes, but we all know the real prize is reading some fantastic books! So join in the fun!!

Here is the list of books I've chosen (and yes, I realize there are 4...I just can't help it. I couldn't decide!):

  • Out by Natsuo Kirino
  • An Artist of the Floating World by Kasuo Isiguro
  • Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami
  • Battle Royale by Koushun Takami

Finally, the Graphic Novels Challenge hosted by the Dewey, at The Hidden Side of a Leaf. This challenge will run all of 2008, and consists of reading 6 graphic novels. Now, surprisingly enough, I have never actually read a graphic novel. So, this one will be new for me. I'm excited though. All the good movies that are coming out based on graphic novels lately has really peaked my interest. (and since my new favorite author Neil Gaiman has written some, I thought it was time to take the plunge!)

Here is my list for THIS challenge:

  • The Sandman, Vol. 1 by Neil Gaiman
  • Mr. Punch by Neil Gaiman
  • Watchmen by Alan Moore
  • From Hell by Alan Moore
  • Ghost World by Daniel Clowes
  • Transmetropolitan, Vol. 1 by Warren Ellis

Your turn!!

Yoo Hoo! I'm so glad you're in! Your choices sound wonderful (all four of them!) I'm excited about several people reading Marukumi because he's one challenging author for me so far. It'll be great to discuss each work, and learn more about authors that are new to me. Thanks for joining!

Bellezza - No, thank YOU for hosting this wonderful challenge!! As I said on your blog, these are more my style. I know Out and Battle Royale are a little more gritty than some. But it's just me!! I'm on my way to the library now to see if I can dig them up right away!

Oh yay! You're going to LOVE Sandman and Mr. Punch. Both are amazing. I've been meaning to read Ghost World for ages too. Loved the movie and I always pick up the GN when I'm at the bookstore, but end up finding something else :p

Chris - I'm really looking forward to this challenge, especially now that I'm on this Neil Gaiman roll!! I loved the movie Ghost World too!!

I'm so glad you decided to join the graphic novel challenge, too. I was going to come over and urge you to after reading your comments at Chris's blog about never reading one before. This is a totally new world of reading for me as well...it will be nice to have another newbie in the game!

If you liked the movie "Road to Perdition" you'll like the graphic novel even more. I did. :)

Debi - That's right. We can be Newbie's together!! With all I have read and the types of books I read, it's a wonder I haven't hit this genre before now!! BTW, I just read Annie's post. That kid is going to be one hell of an author one day!! And I can say, "I knew her when...."!

Kookie - I almost added that one to the list. I loved the movie. LOVED it!!

Very interesting challenges! I've never read any graphic novels either (although sometimes the material in my reading is rather graphic...). :)

The Japanese challenge sounds great; I love Murakami. I have some books on my shelf I need to read, but I'm tempted to see if I can dig up some new fiction. Banana Yoshimoto is also one of my favorites...the novels I've read have been short but lovely and I recommend her. I'll be checking in to see what other people are choosing...

I am really looking forward to the Graphic Novel Challenge. I have a stack to read that would be perfect for the challenge. :-)

So glad you're joining! The Japanese lit challenge sounds like a lot of fun, but I'm already way over-challenged, ridiculously so.

Hmm, interesting. I read a lot of graphic novels. Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman are superb writers. Have you considered reading some more nonfiction focused graphic novels like Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe, Palestine by Joe Sacco, or more autobiographical works like Blankets by Craig Thompson. P. Craig Russell has a complete set of graphic novels on operas, Salome, Bluebeard, and The Ring of the Nibelung are really beautifully illustrated.

Out is really violent but it is a good read. I really enjoyed Hard-boiled Wonderland... it might be my favourite Murakami of the ones I've read so far.
I've got a couple of Ishiguro's in the stacks. That might be one of them. And Battle Royale- I've only seen the movie. Great list! It'll be fun to compare notes on our reads.

I'm still debating whether to join the Graphic Novels Challenge. There are so many to choose from.

I wish I could join the Japanese Literature challenge, but I have already joined too many challenges. I have not yet read that Murakami book, but I heard good things about it, and plus, it seems to be hard to go wrong with his stuff. I loved all the books I've read so far by him.

And yay for trying graphic novels! You'll get hooked, you'll see :P I think that some of Neil's very best work is in comics, and so I think you'll be glad to have joined for that alone. Ghost World is wonderful too. I have never read From Hell, but I really want to. I look forward to your review.
