I just saw that the Short List was announced for this year's Man Booker Prize. The winner will be announced on Oct. 16th. It looks like McEwan is the leading contender so far. I have to say, I've had bad luck recently with Bookers! Both John Banville's The Sea and Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss bored me to tears!! Let's hope one of these are better!

ON CHESIL BEACH, Ian McEwan: Novella about sexual awkwardness of honeymooning couple in 1962. 59-year-old McEwan won the Booker Prize with Amsterdam in 1988.

The only one I've read is "On Chesil Beach"...zzzzzzz. I'm rooting against that one.

do you know of any of these stephanie? have you read any? do you know which are meant to be good?
hmm, this doesn't sound good for my man booker project thingie. I should read them all and you are the second person that tags The Sea as boring.
I think I'll like to read Mr Pyp, and the Gathering, but obviously I haven't read any of them yet.
It does seems sure that McEwan will win, but I hope for a surprise.
I thought the Booker shortlist has become less inspiring over the years.
The only title that interests me is "Darkmans" -- but the 800+ pages is intimidating.
Kookie - On Chesil Beach can't possibly be any more boring that The Sea. It was like watching paint dry!
JP - The only one I've actually heard of is the On Chesil Beach book, but that's just because Ian McEwan wrote it. I haven't really been paying all that much attention to the Bookers this year either.
Valentina - Oh man...The Sea was SO boring. I can't believe I actually finished it!!
Dark Orpheus - I've been a little "uninspired" by the Bookers lately too! Darkmans does sound like the one that I would be most interested in, but you are right. It's a total doorstop!
