One book at a time? Or more than one? If more, are they different types/genres? Or similar?
(We’re talking recreational reading, here—books for work or school don’t really count since they’re not optional.)
A lot has changed the last few years. Until recently, I was strictly a one book woman. I focused on one book at a time until I joined some of the Yahoo book groups. Then I started reading more books at once. It really isn't as difficult as I thought it would be. But I don't usually cross genres when reading. Right now, I'm reading a YA book, a coming-of-age book, a vampire book and 2 non-fiction books.
That being said, if I get really engrossed in a book, I will generally put all the others aside until it's finished. There are just books that are meant to be read immediately! Sometimes, I just can't wait!

I'm similar, one novel, plus poetry and non-fiction.
Mmm, I definitely need to go answer this meme. :) Just had to finish my coffee first.
Me too, but you probably knew that. I don't read as many as you though: 2 or 3 for me.
nope.. no can do lol.. once I am into a book it draws me back to finish it.. if it doesn't, then generally it's not a good book
I'm strictly a one-book-woman... or at least, I've been until I read all the book reading personalities which encouraged me to try once more and read more books at a time ^_^
I hope you don't mind, I'm going to explore all thr blogs listed on your profiles page. Looks incredible interesting ^_^
Happy BTT!
It's very true that, though I do read more than one at a time -- occasionally one grabs me (like you mentioned) and I can't put it down!
Thanks for visiting earlier.
Stephanie --
I was your comment about which translation of the Iliad/Odyssey to read over at Rhinoa's blog, and I'd highly suggest Robert Fagles' translations.
I studied Classics in college, and have read several different translations and his is by far the best I've come across.
I've usually got five or six books going at the same time, but like you, if I get a really engrossing one the others just have to wait until I'm done.
Oh, I'm definitely a one book at a time kind of gal! I am too anal and too linear-brained to do it any other way! lol
Wow, that's awesome that you can have all of those books going at once. I'm afraid I'm tragically stuck in the "one book woman" category :)
Have a great day, and Happy Reading!!!
I'm rarely ever monogomous, Stephanie. Lots of books at a time, usually two or three, but often more. The only time it would be a problem is when two novels are similar or both have strong protagonists ... then I wouldn't choose to continue with both at the same time.
I really think I'm a one book woman, but there are so many temptations. Especially the more groups you join or blogs you visit. LOL.
I tend to read one book at a time. It's just easier for me to focus on one. Although I did recently read 2 books at once, while DH & I were time slicing the new Harry Potter book. I read a mystery while he read HP, and I'd read HP when he wasn't reading it. Happy BTT!
I prefer a book at a time, but if I'm reading something slower, like a non-fiction book, or a collection of short stories or folk tales, I will sometimes also read a novel at the same time.
I agree -- there are some books that I get so involved in and are so worth it that I lay all other reading aside and read that one every spare minute.
I used to read one book at a time but it changed after my TBR pile starts to grow, hehe. I read two books at most and they must be of the different genres, hehe.
Happy reading!
Sometimes a book will capture me and I won't be able to put it down. I've been known the stay up all night just to finish a great book.
I know what you mean about sometimes needing to read just one. I stopped all other reading when I read Harry Potter 7. My answer: http://smsbookreviews.blogspot.com/2007/08/booking-through-thursday-monogamy.html
I'm mostly a one book at a time reader but like I just posted in my answer, sometimes I'll have a couple more on the go. 3 is probably the most though at one time.
I think that's the key, to mix up the genres you are reading at any one time.
I'm with the one book at a time crowd, although occasionally I cross over to the other side and will juggle more than one book. I get too involved with whatever book I'm reading more often than not and would rather hold out until I finish it before beginning a new one.
