Thursday Thirteen #12

Yesterday, I was working at my computer when I got a phone call. I didn't recognize the number, but I knew the area code. It was from my home town. When I answered, it was a friend of mine from high school. Bryan was one of my best buds in high school. I haven't talked to him in years and it's always fun to chat about the old days and all the new stuff in our lives. But I was told another friend of ours died over the weekend. Stacey was in a car accident and ended up with a blood clot. Now, I went to a small high school. It was just like Cheers -- everyone knew your name! I didn't know Stacey all that well. My most vivid memory of him was in 4th grade. He snuck out some of his dad's chewing tobacco and decided it would be a good idea to try to with the other guys at recess. He ended up throwing up in the trashcan in the classroom after recess!! Hard one to forget!

But he was a nice guy, and that's really all that matters. So..I got nostalgic last night and pulled out my old yearbooks. My first reaction, was oh man....look at that hair!! My goth days didn't hit till college, and in high school I had that big hair, glam rock thing of the 80's going on!! Sheesh...I was a loser!

So...in honor of Stacey, I present to you today's Thursday Thirteen topic:

Thirteen Songs from my high school days in the 80's! (I will try to redeem myself next week with some cooler music from college!)

1…. Never Say Goodbye by Bon Jovi - This was our senior prom theme! I loved Bon Jovi!! I mean, come on. Who wouldn't like a band with an album called Slippery When Wet? This isn't close to my favorite song, but I thought it was appropriate to have in the list. I think I was just starting that goth thing about this time....in the late 80's ALL prom dresses were pink, yellow, and white. Mine was black. The ONLY one at the prom!! And it was kick-ass too! I gotta find a picture of it!!

2. Talk Dirty to Me by Poison - Talk about your glam rock!! These guys were it. We listened to this song....ALOT! Bret Michaels was a babe too. He had beautiful blue eyes, and could put on makeup WAY better than me!!

3. Home Sweet Home by Motely Crue. I was a big Crue fan too. Nikki Sixx was my personal fav. I had a thing for bad boys and tattoos even back then. My best friend and I snuck out to go see them at a concert about 60 miles away (we were 16 and our parents NEVER would have let us go by ourselves!) We cried when they played this song. To this day, this is one of my favorite songs. Many memories associated with it!

4. I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister - I STILL laugh when I see this video. The guy from Animal House yelling, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE??? We used to sing this as we were "cruising", windows down and long hair blowing!! I TOLD you I was such a loser!

5. Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Leppard. I guess it was just the sexual innuendo with this one that appealed to us!! It would have to be, cause this song kinda sucks, now that I look back!!

6. I Remember You by Skid Row - Talk about a GREAT song to dance to in a high school gym decorated with crepe paper!! Slow music at it's best!! Sebastian Bach definitely knew how to sing a ballad.

7. Sweet Emotion by Areosmith - OK...technically this is a 70's song. Toys in the Attic was released in '75, but we also loved the Classic Rock thing. And this was a prom theme for an old boyfriend of mine. We had a lot fun together, and this song always reminds me of him!

8. Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Another song that was actually released before I was in high school. But this song had STAYING power. We listened to it all the time!!

9. 1999 by Prince - This was one of the few cassettes (talk about dating myself!) that I ever actually wore out. Little Red Corvette, Let's go Crazy, Delirious......so many great songs came from this one!!

10. Take on Me by A-Ha - Cool video and an even cooler song! Brings back memories on a summer night, hanging out with my friends!

11. What you Need by INXS - My friends and I went to see INXS at the State Fair on their Listen Like Thieves tour. Mr. Mister and the Bangles also played that year! We were young and it was fun.

12. Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds - When The Breakfast Club came out, a group of us tripped to Springfield to see it. This movie affected all of us! It was an instant classic and one that we rented over and over again. To this day, I know the movie almost line by line. This song was one of the best!

13. Don't Know What You've Got (Til It's Gone) by Cinderella - I saved this one for last. It was the Homecoming Theme the year my brother died. There was a big tribute to him, a retiring of his basketball jersey, and lots of his old baseball friends that came that year. I was actually in college, but it still reminds me of high school. And I thought it was a fitting way to end my little dedication to a friend that passed away. God Bless his wife and kids.

I could probably go on and list at least another 13, but I won't. And I hope to redeem myself with a "Cooler" 13 next week!!
Later!

Thursday Thirteen #11

Yeah...I know. I've been slacking this week. Tons on my mind....just nothing I want to put in print, if you know what I mean!! But I thought I'd come out and add a TT! I was looking back at my last couple of post and saw a trend. Lots of Pirates!! I was thinking about the reasons I liked Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End so much. I think this one appealed to me more because of Keira Knightly. I LOVE a movie with a great, strong, female lead!!! Maybe that's just the inner feminist coming out in me. Or maybe I just get sick and tired of the heroines sitting around waiting to be rescued when they are perfectly capable of rescuing themselves! So.....in honor of all that jazz, I give you today's TT:

Thirteen Kick-Ass Chicks in the Flicks!! (or on TV)

1…. Buffy Summers. Ok...I will admit it. I'm a HUGE Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. I LOVED this show!! (I even liked that cheezy, campy movie with Kristy Swanson). There is nobody tougher than Sarah Michelle Geller as Buffy. I mean really. How many people can survive moving to the Hellmouth AND look good doing it? She is my #1 KickAss Chick!!

You know me, not much with the damseling.

2. Elizabeth Swann - Keira Knightly has really taken this character and made her a PERSON. She was pretty pampered and spoiled in the first movie, but by At World's End she was commanding her own ship!! Besides, she could handle a sword with the best of them!!

Jack, it would never have worked out between us.

3. The Bride - Uma Thurman's Bride in Quentin Taratino's Kill Bill movies was one of the baddest chicks to ever grace the screen!! When she was almost killed on her wedding day and her child stolen, this gal fought back against the team of assassins that she used to be a part of. Hers was probably the highest body count ever!! Talk about Bad Ass. NO ONE needed to protect her!

The Bride: You can relax for now. I'm not going to murder you in front of your daughter. Copperhead: That's being more rational than Bill led me to believe you were capable of.
The Bride: It's mercy, compassion, and forgiveness I lack; not rationality.

4. Ellen Ripley - Let's face it. Sigourney Weaver is the MOTHER of all kick ass movie babes! She was a pioneer. She was a renegade. She was one the first women to stand up for HERSELF and take action. Although I though Alien was great, Aliens is truly my favorite. When Ripley takes on the mama alien at the end of the movie.....Classic!!

Get away from her, you bitch!

5. Willow Rosenberg - Didn't I say I was a big Buffy fan?? Well.....Willow was actually my favorite character. And talk about an evolution over the seasons. She started out vulnerable and mousy and scared of her own shadow. What she eventually became was one incredibly powerful witch...that could take care of herself. I mean, really. When her girlfriend Tara was killed, she extracted her revenge by SKINNING the guy who did it!! Don't mess with Willow!

Willow: Then, talk. Keep eye contact. Funny is good, but don't be glib. And remember, if you hurt her, I will beat you to death with a shovel.
[Riley looks frightened]
Willow: A vague disclaimer is nobody's friend.

6. Trinity - Carrie-Anne Moss played Trinity in the Matrix movies. Not only could was she tough and could kick some serious butt, she looked AWESOME in black leather!! I mean, really. It takes a lot to pull off those clothes!! In the end, she knew all along (just as we did) that Neo was "The One"! Her faith never wavered.

Trinity: My name's Trinity.
Neo: *The* Trinity? Who cracked the IRS d-base?
Trinity: That was a long time ago.
Neo: Jesus...
Trinity: What?
Neo: I just thought... you were a guy.
Trinity: Most guys do.

7. Dana Scully - Again....another TV show I LOVED!! Gillian Anderson as Scully was so good because SHE was the skeptic. She was smart, beautiful AND always the voice of reason in a world that really didn't have any use for reason!! And she could definitely take care of herself. One of these days, I'm going to have to sit down and watch the entire series...from start to finish!

Hello, Mulder? Can you hear me? I'm at the hotel. Where are you? What do you mean, "What hotel? Las Vegas. I'm in Las Vegas, aren't you? You called me. What do you mean you didn't call me? Oh, man, I am going to kick their asses.

8. Sydney Bristow - Jennifer Garner plays Sydney in the TV show Alias. She is an international spy recruited out of college and trained for espionage and self-defense. She's part of a covert branch of the CIA. Family ties, betrayal, murder and lies are just a few of the obstacles that Sydney has to overcome. But doesn't she look good doing it???

I just wanted to rip his finger right off again. Does that make me a bad person?

9. Hermione Granger - Emma Watson is literally growing up on screen. She plays an excellent Hermione. She is brilliant and beautiful. She has overcome being raised by muggles. And she is more than just a sidekick. Hermione rocks!! All little girls want to BE her! She can cast any spell there is, and yet she is incredibly aware of the repercussions.

What's got your wand in a knot?

10. River Tam - Summer Glau plays the hyper-intelligent powerhouse in the TV show Firefly (and the movie Serenity). The people that had her at The Academy trained her to be....something. Probably an assassin, but since the show was cancelled, I guess we will never know!! (This STILL brings me to tears!) River is kind of cryptic and a bit of a loose cannon, but her brother Simon is around to help her out. And she can kick butt on her own!! Just ask Jayne!

You take care of me, Simon. You've always taken care of me. My turn.

11. Alice - Resident Evil - Milla Jovovich plays Alice in all the Resident Evil movies. After surviving the Zombies from The Umbrella corporation, she was given an injection of the T-Virus and now has some killer super-human strength and speed. She's going to need it to kill a world invaded by Zombies!!

My name is Alice. I worked for the Umbrella Corporation, the largest and most powerful commercial entity in the world. I was head of security at a secret high-tech facility, The Hive, a giant underground laboratory developing experimental viral weaponry. But there was an incident. The virus escaped and everybody died. Trouble was... they didn't stay dead.

12. Kate Austin - Lost is probably one of the coolest shows to grace the airwaves in since Twin Peaks! Evangaline Lilly plays Kate and she is COOL. She was onboard Oceanic 815 as a captured fugitive, who killed her evil step-father. She's is tough, beautiful and in the middle of a love triangle with two of the major hotties on the island. Kate can take care of herself and that's why she is on this list!

Sawyer: You taste like strawberries.
Kate: You taste like fish biscuits.

13. Thelma from Scooby-Doo - I know....Everyone always liked Daphne. Cause she was pretty. I liked Thelma. She was smart and could take care of herself! She is the very first...the start of the smart ass-kicking generation of women!!

Jinkies!

OK...That's it for now. Happy Thursday Thirteen!!

Later!!

Thursday Thirteen #10

I have been SO EXCITED all week!! Starting tomorrow is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. I'm a HUGE Johnny Depp, Jack Sparrow fan, and I'm counting the minutes until I get to sit in the theater with my big bucket of buttered popcorn, large Diet Pepsi and bag of Twizzlers! So I thought I would do a TT on Summer Blockbusters.

THIRTEEN SUMMER MOVIES I'M MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO:

1…Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (May 25) - Yes....this is it!! I love, love, loved the first movie and was pissed as hell that the second ended the way it did. There was such a lead-in for the last movie that it ended without an ending, if that makes sense. No closure. And I NEED closure. So I'm ready for tomorrow!!

2. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (July 13) - Yes....I'm a Harry Potter geek too!! I've loved all the movies so far, but The Goblet of Fire was fantastic!! I'm expecting great things out of this movie too!! Helena Bonham Carter is in this one...and I think she is cool as hell!

3. 1408 (June 22) - OK...I have to say just one more time for the record, I LOVE JOHN CUSAK!! It wouldn't be a great summer without a great John Cusak movie, now would it?? And one that is based on a Stephen King story? A good fright is just what is needed this summer! With Samuel L. Jackson, how can you miss?

4. Live Free or Die Hard (June 27) - I have been a Bruce Willis fan since Moonlighting! Since this is the summer of movie sequels, it seems fitting that John McClane is back! Besides....Kevin Smith is in it! That alone would be enough for me to want to see it. Yippee-ki-yay!

5. Stardust (Aug 10) - Neil Gaiman's novel is going to hit the big screen. I haven't read this one (YET), but I've become a big fan. This movie has lots of big names like DeNiro, Danes and Pfeiffer. Looks like it's going to be a fun one!

6. Transformers (July 4) - I never actually played with Transformers, but my brother had a ton of them! I saw previews for this movie last night and it looks fantastic! Steven Speilberg at his best! This one looks like it's going to be a lot of fun!

7. Ratatouille (June 29) - Ok...I have kids. What can I say? I love a good cartoon, and Pixar does them better than anyone! I haven't been disappointed yet by one. Ratatouille is one that the whole family will enjoy!

8. Evan Almighty (June 22) - I wasn't a huge fan of Bruce Almighty...mostly because I'm not a huge Jim Carey fan. This was better than most. (It's the silly slapstick stuff I really dislike). But Stever Carell CRACKS ME UP! The Office is one of my favorite shows, and Steve Carell building an Ark? Who could resist??

9. Ocean's 13 (June 8) Hello?? Gorgeous men alert?? George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia....need I go on?? I loved the first and hated the second . This is a chance for redemption folks!

10. Halloween (Aug 31) To redo a CLASSIC like Halloween takes something special. Especially if I want to go see it. Rob Zombie is that special something. I was absolutely blown away by House of Thousand Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. If anyone can make this movie, it's him! I can not wait to see what surprises Mr. Zombie has in store for us!

11. Bourne Ultimatum (Aug 3) Not much to say here. Loved the first 2. Figure Matt Damon will be able to pull this one off as well. Should be non-stop action, just like the others.

12. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (July 20) - I love Adam Sandler. But I love Adam Sandler best when he's doing comedy. I like his weird sense of humor. With Kevin James, this one should be a riot! Two straight guys pretending to be married??? Can't wait!

13. The Simpsons Movie (July 28) - I dare you to try to find one Gen X'er out there that hasn't sat down and enjoyed at least one episode of The Simpson's! How could you not go see the movie?? 18 years in the making!

Hope you all enjoy a great summer of movies!!

Thursday Thirteen # 9

I wasn't going to do a TT today. Been a busy week, I hadn't thought of a topic, and didn't feel like listing the things on my desk! But I got an email this morning from my friend Kris. You know the kind...one of those mushy, make-you-cry, Chicken Soup for the Soul kind of stories. (and yes, I fell for it and actually shed a tear!) It was about a little boy that wanted to be a fireman and it got me thinking. What did I want to be when I was growing up? I can tell you, I certainly never spent my time dreaming of sitting in an office all day, dealing with office politics, going to hours of boring meetings and trying to hit deadlines! I had bigger dreams than this! But once you get to college, it seems the push is finding a career in which you can earn a decent living, not necessarily be happy. Which brings me to today's TT:

Thirteen Things I wanted to be when I grew up!

1….Writer - Oh come on. This is a book blog! Isn't it every reader's secret dream to BE a writer?? I can write. Give me a topic and I can write. For hours. I was great in Creative writing and speech classes....when given a topic. It's sitting in front of a blank piece of paper or a blank screen that was the kicker. I just don't think I have the creativity to come up with my OWN ideas! But that's ok....there are lots of people out there that can, and I can just read their stuff!

2. Doctor - When I was little, I was very sick. I spent a lot of time in hospitals and around doctors. I thought, "Wow. I could do this. I'd love to take care of kids just like me." Then one day, I was at a park in Pana. My brother was in a baseball tournament, and I was at the playground. I was probably 9 at the time. A little boy decided it would be a good idea to stand on top of the monkey bars and jump to the next set. Of course, he fell. He landed on his arm and it broke....right out of his skin. I happened to be standing there at the time. I almost passed out, and decided then and there that I could never be a doctor!

3. Girl Detective - Ok....YES, I read a lot of Nancy Drew books when I was younger. AND Trixie Belden. I can remember thinking what would be cooler than driving around in a blue convertible, having a boyfriend like Ned, and solving mysteries and crimes for the police??? I SO could have done this one!

4. Ballerina - Don't all little girls dream of being a ballerina? When I was 5, I took ballet lessons. I did this for a couple of years. I loved the outfits...and the shoes. I just hated the dancing lessons!! I started taking tumbling lessons at the same time, and found I liked the speed and power of tumbling over the grace and elegance of ballet. Figures!

5. Circus Acrobat - Yes....I really did want to run away and join the circus!! I loved to tumble. I was always doing cartwheels and flips around the house. Every year my grandfather would take me to the Shriner's Circus. Now my grandpa was a Shriner and a Mason. A real big-wig. (I didn't know this until his funeral) So he got great seats and we even got to go "back stage" and meet some of the performers. I loved the acrobats the best. They had beautiful, sparkly outfits and lots of makeup. Yep.....I thought I could do that!

6. Jockey - What can I say? I grew up on a farm and we had horses. I loved to ride. I had my own pony when I was little. Her name was Princess....and she was dapple grey, and I used to race her around the pastures. I was going to win the Kentucky Derby one day. But the hats killed it for me.

7. Singer - In 1978, my friend's mom took us to see Grease! Of course, I was only 7, and there was a lot about it I didn't understand. But I did know I wanted to be Olivia Newton John! She was so pretty and boy could she sing! Later on, I wanted to be more like Madonna. She was so cool.....but sadly, I don't have the talent! Still doesn't stop me from singing in the car though!

8. Astronaut - or just Starship Captain! My dad watched a lot of Star Trek, and I wanted to be part of that crew. Actually, I wanted to form a coup and overthrow Captain Kirk. I thought I would be WAY better than him! They needed a woman's touch! I actually thought going up in space would be cool, till I realized just how tight the space is in a rocket!! I'm WAY too claustrophobic to do that!

9. Vampire Slayer - OK....so I wasn't a little girl. I was a grown woman! Sue me. I still wanted to be Buffy! That girl could totally kick ass and take names. And I really liked Faith, the "Bad" Slayer. She was wicked cool. Still in the back of my head, I'm thinking I could do this!

10. Reporter - Again, back to the writing thing. After I saw Superman, I wanted to be Lois Lane. Super cool reporter that falls in love with Superman. (of course, that dream faded when I realized she couldn't be THAT great of a reporter if she wasn't smart enough to figure out Superman was Clark Kent without the glasses!)

11. Lawyer - I know, I know.....too many lawyers in the world today. But I actually thought when I went to college, that I would go on to law school. I lived 20 minutes, from Springfield, IL, and when I was in high school, I got a chance to be a page in the State House of Representatives. Now it sounds better than it really was.....running after pens, folders and lunch. But I loved being in the Sessions and feeling important. Of course PoliSci in college sucked!! I was way too liberal to get along with my very conservative professors. And it wasn't fun anymore. I was just too burned out on school to go another 3 years anyway.

12. Teacher - Looking back on things now, I realized I wanted to teach my junior year in college. I spent 10 hours a week tutoring some 3rd and 4th grades from the "other side of the tracks". They were great kids that had some serious disadvantages in life. I loved each of them and they worked hard for me. But I already had too many business hours in and didn't think I should change majors so late in the game. Not enough money to go another year or two. I should have just stuck with it.

13. Book Reviewer - I love books. I always wanted to see my name in print, in say the New York Times or the Chicago Trib reviewing books. Won't happen, but you can always look for my byline and reviews here!!
Later!

Thursday Thirteen # 7

Well....it's that time again, and it's Lucky #7. But today, I'm wicked busy at work and don't have all that much time to be creative. So, it's a boring one for me today, but I needed to make a list anyway!! So here it is:

Thirteen Things that Stephanie Has to do this weekend!!

1…My first order of business is to finish Absurdistan. It HAS to go back to the library by Saturday!! It's an Inter-library loan book and it was due yesterday!! I'm their best customer these days, and I would hate to have my privileges revoked!!

2. I also need to finish Blue Zone by Andrew Gross. I am late with a review to Harper Collins!! Man...being sick really cut into my reading time. I'm about 1/2 through this and it's really fast-paced, so I shouldn't have any problems finishing it.

3. We have 3 movies from Netflix that I'd LIKE to watch sometime in the next few days. The Good Shepard, The Pursuit of Happyness, and Deja Vu. I know....good titles. Just need to find the time!!

4. I have piles of laundry to do. It's amazing how much laundry can accumulate with 5 people. I try to do a load or so a night....but inevitably, I always have tons on the weekends.

5. Tomorrow night after work, I must go to the grocery store. You know...I hate grocery shopping. I always forget something. It doesn't matter if I make a list, it just happens. I'm about out of Diet Pepsi, and would hate to start the weekend caffeine free. That CAN'T happen!

6. Bella has to turn in her final "Book It" sheets on Monday. For a 1st grader, to get your "Book It" coupons, you have to read 10 books a month. BUT to get a BigTime Certificate at the end of the year you need to read 100 books! My being sick this month put a damper on our nightly reading, so I need to make sure she has at least 4 books done this weekend! Danny the Dinosaur and Sammy the Seal, here I come!

7. Because we only have a 3 bedroom house and the closet space SUCKS, I usually have to pack up the clothes by the season. It's time I pull out the girls' shorts, tanks and sandals for the summer!!

8. Since I'm doing #7, I might as well get the bedrooms straightened out. The kids have been lax the last few....months! It's time for an overhaul of putting toys away, dusting, and cleaning out under the beds. That could be scary!! (this one will be done with mucho help from the kiddies themselves!)

9. While on the subject, I need to haul the vacuum up to the top floor and vacuum and dust. I try to do this weekly, but it never happens. I really need to plan better.

10. The 2 bathrooms need cleaned. Do you see a pattern here?? 3 or 4 weeks of feeling bad, and the house has gone to hell in a handbasket. Try as they might (which really wasn't that much) the rest of the family didn't do too well without me!

11. Might as well go for the glory and clean out the frig while I'm at it. This is like the worst for me. Stuff always gets pushed to the back. You never know what might be lurking there!!

12. After all this cleaning on Saturday, I think I will need to take the kiddies for Ice Cream!! Yeah!! The Dream Hut is open again, and I love their waffle cones!! Besides that, they have little candy eyes and lips to put on the cones for the girls.

13. And the piece de resistance of the weekend. Tickets to the White Sox/Angels game at Comisky. Yes, I do realize it's not Comisky Field anymore. But it just doesn't sound the same by saying "US Cellular" field!! We have great seats and want to get to the field earlier. My son is making a sign for Mr. Jim Thome, who is a graduate of the high school in our fair town. Chad's hoping for at least a wave from the Big Guy! Can't wait. Supposed to be fair and in the 70's!!

Thursday Thirteen #6

Sorry Guys. Been sick. Still. I tell you what. This thing has zapped the life from me. I am starting to feel better, but it seems to have taken some of my creativity from me. So yesterday when I was reading Kookiejar's blog and I saw her History Quiz, I thought I would used it as a Thursday Thirteen! Save me from trying to think up a topic on my own! So here's what to do. Go to Wikipedia and type in your birthday (without the year), then you are supposed to list 3 important events, 2 birthdays, a death and a holiday. I'm just going to round out the list to:

Thirteen Things that happened on my birthday of January 13:

1. 1112 Pope Honorius II grants a papal sanction to the miliary order known as the Knights Templar, delcaring them to be "an Army of God".

2. 1776 - The British raid Prudence Island in Narragansett Bay.

3. 1840 - The steamship Lexington burns and sinks four miles off the coast of Long Island and 139 lives are lost.

4. 1964 - Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope John Paul II, is appointed Archbishop of Krakow, Poland.

5. 1968 - Johnny Cash records his landmark album At Folsum Prison live at Folsum State Prison.

6. 1832 - Horatio Alger, Jr. American Minister and author was born.

7. 1926 - Michael Bond, British author was born. Bond was the creator of Paddinton Bear.

8. 1961 - Julia Louis-Dreyfus, American actress was born. (Big Seinfeld fan here. HAD to put this one in!)

9. 1966 - Patrick Dempsey (AKA Dr. McDreamy), American Actor was born.

10. 1977 - Orlando Bloom, British Actor was born. (I can't believe he's so YOUNG!)

11. 1926 - Wyatt Earp, American cowboy and lawman, died at the age of 80 in California. (Man...he survived Dodge City and the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and died because of a urinary tract infection. Bummer.)

12. 1978 - Hubert H. Humphrey (Vice President under Lyndon B. Johnson) died in Waverly, Minnesota of terminal cancer.

13. Feast of St. Hilarius of Poitiers (I'm Catholic and I've never even heard of this one!)

Thursday Thirteen #5

Sorry guys. I've been so sick this week, I could hardly stand, much less log-on. I did post a short review, but that's about it!! I woke up with a fever on Monday....and I still have one today! So this one will be short as well.
With a tear in my eye and a sadness in my heart, I'm posting this Thursday Thirteen. Kurt Vonnegut, one the greatest authors of this century, passed away yesterday. He was my brother's favorite author. Me? I've only read Slaughterhouse-Five. And if you look at previous posts, you can see I listed it as one of my top 10 books! So I hold my head in shame that I haven't read more of his work, which leads me to my Thursday Thirteen:

Thirteen Things Works of Kurt Vonnegut that I must read:

1. Cat's Cradle - Filled with G-men and scientists and even ordinary folks, this novel is about people in search of the world's most important and dangerous substances....a new form of ice that freezes at room temperature.

2. Player Piano - Vonnegut’s first novel spins the chilling tale of engineer Paul Proteus, who must find a way to live in a world dominated by a super computer and run completely by machines.

3. The Sirens of the Titans - The richest and most depraved man on Earth takes a wild space journey to distant worlds, learning about the purpose of human life along the way.

4. God Bless You , Mr. Rosewater - Eliot Rosewater, drunk, volunteer fireman, and president of the fabulously rich Rosewater foundation, is about to attempt a noble experiment with human nature... with a little help from writer Kilgore Trout.

5. Breakfast of Champions - Auto dealer, Dwayne Hoover sinks into madness after reading Kilgore Trout.

6. Slapstick - Dr. Wilbur Daffodil-11 Swain, centenarian, the last President of the United States, King of Manhattan, and one-half (along with his sister, Eliza) of the most powerful intelligence since Einstein, is penning his autobiography.

7. Jailbird - a fractured and comic, pure Vonnegut novel about the world of high crimes and misdemeanors in government...and in the heart. About the Watergate Scandal.

8. Deadeye Dick - funny, chillingly satirical look at the death of innocence. A tale of crime and punishment that makes us rethink what we believe...and who we say we are.

9. Mother Night - American Howard W. Campbell, Jr., a spy during World War II, is now on trial in Israel as a Nazi war criminal. But is he really guilty?

10. Welcome to the Monkey House - Collection of short stories.

11. Hocus Pocus - While awaiting trial for an initially unspecified crime, Vietnam vet and college professor Eugene Debs Hartke realizes that he has killed exactly as many people as he has had sex with, a coincidence that causes him to doubt his atheism.

12. Timequake - The last novel he ever wrote. Vonnegut's Alter-ego Kilgore Trout is at it again....messing around with space time continuum.

13. A Man Without a Country - Vonnegut's most recent published work, this is a collection of articles that he wrote. Social Commentary from Vonnegut!

Thursday Thirteen #4

If there is one thing I love almost as much as books, it's movies. And when I logged on to Yahoo this morning, I saw that Bob Clark was killed in a car accident yesterday. For those of you that don't know, Bob Clark was a Hollywood director. His movies included the seasonal favorite A Christmas Story (one of the greatest Christmas movies....EVER!) and the Porky's movies. I was really sad to see this. But it started me thinking of movies....which led me to this week's Thursday Thirteen topic. As a child of the 80's, I watched lots of movies. These movies shaped me into who I am today. And yes, I know almost ever line of each and every one of the following:

Thirteen of the Best Teen Movies of the 80's!

1. Say Anything (1989) - You say, "AGAIN with the John Cusak??" Yep. This is my #1 favorite teen movie! The movie that made me fall in love. If Lloyd Dobler, the underachieving-kickboxer can end up with the beautiful valedictorian Diane Court, anything is possible!! "She's gone. She gave me a pen. I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen."

2. The Breakfast Club (1985) - One Saturday detention, five unhappy teens, and their scramble to prove they're each something more than a brain , an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Could a person ask for anymore teen angst? "But face it. You're a neo maxi zoom dweebie, what would you be doing if you weren't out making yourself a better citizen?"

3. Heathers (1989) - Ok...this one is probably at the opposite end of the happy teen movie spectrum. It's the Anti-John Hughes teen movie! Can you picture Molly Ringwald spiking some's Tab with Drano? But if you ever had dreams about offing a classmate, this is one movie you should see! Christian Slater as J.D and Winona Ryder as Veronica are the coolest kids around. "Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count."

4. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) - This movie tells you EXACTLY what it's like to be a teen in search of the ultimate: sex, drugs and rock-n-roll! And it launched the careers of so many actors, including Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicholas Cage, and Forest Whittacre to name just a few. Besides, where would we be without this little tidbit of wisdom: "People on 'ludes should not drive!"

5. Ferris Buehller's Day Off (1986) - Talk about the ultimate slacker movie. This in another John Hughes movie....about a guy on a quest to take it easy and ditch school for the day. What's not to love about this movie? Anyone, Anyone?? The sites of Chicago, singing "Danke Schoen" in a parade and having fun with your best friends. " Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in The Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I'd still have to bum rides off people."

6. Better Off Dead (1985) - Yes...again with John Cusak. But come on, you have to admit this movie is hilarious! Lane Meyer's is dealing with a lot. His girlfriend dumped him. He didn't make the ski team. His family is nuts. And there is a homicidal paperboy after him! Face it. Lane can't even commit suicide correctly! This movie is filled with some of the best one-liners ever!! "Now that's a real shame when folks be throwin' away a perfectly good white boy like that."

7. Risky Business (1983) - Now, I'm not a Tom Cruise fan...at all. I personally think the man is a loon. But this movie is Pre- Couch-hopping, Scientology-is-the-way craziness. This is good clean fun. Well....as clean as it can be when a high school kid opens a brothel in his house to make enough money to pay for the repairs to his Dad's Porsche that he dumped in Lake Michigan when his parents were out of town. OK....not exactly clean family-fun. But no one will ever forget Tom Cruise in his tidy-whities singing Old Time Rock-n-Roll!! "I don't believe this! I've got a trig midterm tomorrow, and I'm being chased by Guido the killer pimp. "

8. Sixteen Candles (1984) - Molly Ringwald, as Samantha Baker, is just too cute. Her parents forgot her sweet sixteenth, her sister is getting married to a Bo-hunk, her house is invaded with relatives, she gave a geek her undies, and the boy of her dreams doesn't knows she exists. Teenage life at it's worst!! "Donger's here for five hours, and he's got somebody. I live here my whole life, and I'm like a disease."

9. Pretty in Pink Ok...so I was obsessed with John Hughes movies!! Sue me. The underdog always wins and the girl always gets the guy. Total fiction, but it can give you a little hope! Should Andie have chased after rich, repentant Blane, or stayed at the prom with poor, devoted Duckie?? She was in love with the Richie, and she got him. Poor Duckie. I still mist up though when they hold hands and walk into the prom together to face everyone! And wasn't James Spader just the greatest bad guy all dressed up in white?? "I know I'm old enough to be his mother, but when the Duck laid that kiss on me last night, I swear my thighs just went up in flames! He must practice on melons or something"

10. The Lost Boys (1987) - You can't have a list of 80's teen movies and not include at least one movie with the Corey's! I, personally, like bad boy Vampire David (Keifer Suterland). Great movie. Again...what's not to love? It's a teen Vampire movie. Hot teen Vamps. This must be where my obsession started!! "One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach, all the damn vampires."

11. The Outsiders (1983) - I loved this book!! I loved this movie. Talk about throwing every hot teen star in Hollywood in one film! It was the Greasers Vs. The Socs. Poor little abandoned Johnny gets attacked one night and ends up killing a drunk Socs. He heads out of town with Ponyboy...and they end up being heros. The lines between good and evil are really blurred in this one. Stars just about everyone including Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze and Ralph Macchio. "We gotta win that fight tonight. We gotta get even with those Socs! Let's do it for Johnny, man. We'll do it for Johnny!"

12. Can't Buy Me Love (1987) - Ok...so this one is kind of cheezy. What can I say? That's who I am!! Long before he became Dr. McDreamy, Patrick Dempsey played in this cute movie about a geek trying to fit in with the Popular kids. He tried a new approach. He tried to BUY his way in!! I actually went to see this one with my Grandma. It will always hold a soft spot in my heart because of that. "Nerds, jocks. My side, your side. It's all bullshit. Its hard enough just trying to be yourself. "

13. Adventures in Babysitting (1897) - I saw this when I actually WAS babysitting! Who ever said babysitting was easy never saw this movie!! When Chris Parker takes the kids she is babysitting into Downtown Chicago to find a friend at the bus station, she knew she could get into some trouble. Never in a million years could she guess the kind of trouble it would be!! Fun movie. Nothing more, nothing less. " Nobody leaves this place without singing the blues."

Well....that's it till next time!! Later!

Thursday Thirteen #3

This past week, I was trolling around on the net, and I caught a trailer for the new John Cusak movie (have I mentioned my love for John Cusak??) It's called 1408 and is taken from a short story in Everything's Eventual by Stephen King (have I mentioned my love for Stephen King??) Now I'm pretty excited. My favorite actor and my favorite author teaming up for a project! In comes my husband to throw cold water on the whole idea. He says, "But don't you think Stephen King movies are generally pretty bad?" Now I will be the first to admit some of his books and short stories don't translate well to the big screen (do I have to remind you of Maximum Overdrive or Children of the Corn?). But on a whole, I think Stephen King has done exceedingly well with movies. In a quest to show my husband he is wrong, I have come up with this week's Thursday Thirteen:

Thirteen of the Best Film Adaptations of Stephen King Stories:

1. Shawshank Redemption - Ok....maybe it's bad that I'm starting with a non-horror novella. But this is one of my ALL-TIME favorite movies!! Tim Robbins as Andy Dufrense and the great Morgan Freeman as Red are both phenomenal. This is the story of 2 men that meet in prison and the friendship that bonds them together.

2. Stand By Me - Yikes. Two in a row...and from the same book (Different Seasons). Not a scary movie by any means. But a story of 4 young boys, their friendship, and a quest to see a dead body. (Did I mention that John Cusak makes an appearance in this movie??) It's a beautiful story and bring tears to my eyes every time I watch it.

3. The Shining - I mean the Kubrick's version, not the mini-series that was on a few years back. What can you say about Jack Nicholson? He brings a creepiness to Jack Torrence that sends a chill up my spine. The pivotal moment when his wife looks at the novel he's been writing.....and the only line that is typed over and over again is "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"....is so unsettling. And that creepy little boy saying REDRUM....Yikes!

4. Carrie - This is the story of a young high school girl that has telekinetic powers. She is raised by her mother, a religious fanatic, that will lock her in the closet if she does something wrong. Sissy Spacek plays Carrie and is so utterly convincing, you don't know whether to feel sorry for her or be scared of her!

5. The Stand - Anyone who has read this blog at all knows this is my very favorite Stephen King novel. It was made into a mini-series in '94 which is the only way that any justice could be done. Far too much story for a movie. The casting in this movie was phenomenal (except for Molly Ringwald as Frannie....EWWW). Gary Sinese as Stu, Rob Lowe as Nick, Matt Frewer as the Trashcan Man and a genius move of Bill Fagerbakke as Tom Cullen lead an outstanding cast that also includes Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee and Ray Walston. One of the greatest stories of Good vs. Evil....ever!

6. The Green Mile - This story actually started out as a serial novel written in 6 parts. It's the outstanding story of the lives of guards on death row as it leads up the the execution of a wrongfully accused man with the power to heal. Again, the cast of Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, James Cromwell and Sam Rockwell make this movie what it is. Heartwarming and Heartbreaking at the very same time.

7. Misery - Kathy Bates SO deserved the Oscar for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes to Uber-Obsessed fan of Paul Sheldon, an author (played by James Caan). She completely freaked me out.....and the scene where she hobbles Sheldon, to this day makes me cringe!! Great movie!

8. 'Salem's Lot - I'm always up for a good Vampire movie. And this one delivered. Directed by Tobe Hooper (of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame) and with David Soul as Ben Mears, this movie was incredibly frightning. There is one scene where a little boy comes back to take his brother....and he's hovering around outside the window. I had nightmares about that for years!!

9. The Dead Zone - There aren't many people I find creepier than Christopher Walken anyway! And he's super as Johnny Smith, a man who was in a horrible accident that left him in a coma for years. When he awakens, he can see a person's future by touching them. Martin Sheen is also great as a cowardly presidental candidate.

10. Needful Things - Not everyone likes this movie as much as I did. Max von Sydow plays the role of Leland Gaunt (or Satan) who opens up a store called Needful Things in a quaint Maine town. You can get whatever your heart desires most in this store.....but there is always a price. This movie shows a real dark side to human nature. I loved it!

11. Heart's in Atlantis - Anthony Hopkins is one of my very favorite actors! He plays Ted, a old man that moves into an upstairs apartment. He befriends the lonely little boy that lives with his mother in the downstairs apartment. Ted has "magical" powers, but is being chased by "lowmen". It's a great movie, and Hope Davis as the mother is so cold you can almost see her breath!

12. The Secret Window - Not the greatest movie ever....same sort of premise as The Dark Half. BUT it has an extremely sexy Johnny Depp....and he makes crazy look not-quite-so-bad! John Turturro as John Shooter is also fantastic!

13. Silver Bullet - OK....I'll give you cheezy. But hey! Anything with that crazy Gary Busey is going to be interesting! It's a werewolf movie, and Busey plays the crazy Uncle (go figure) to two youngsters. Corey Haim is great as the nephew who is paralzyed, but uses a wheelchair his uncle built, called the Silver Bullet! There is a seriel killer on the loose, but Marty gets it in his head that the killer is really a warewolf. And he and his sister try to find him. Come on....it's a fun movie!!

There are so many other King movies that I love (like Pet Sematary, Cujo, Rose Red, and Cat's eye). Others that I hated (Sometimes They Come Back, The Mangler, and Christine). But I will watch them all!!

Thursday Thirteen #2

OK....I'm not much of an American Idol person. Oh, I watch it sometimes. But my taste in music really doesn't fit with the rest of America, because the people I like never win! I dig the rockers, but the Chris Daughtery's and Bo Bice's just don't seem to make it. Good singers go home and people like Sanjaya Malakar remain in the game. When I was watching him sing on Tuesday night, I noticed (like everyone else in the country) the little girl crying for him. (Now, personally I wanted to cry too...but it was because he mutilated a great Kinks song!) And the one thought that passed through my head was "Lord...that little girl is going to grow up to be a stalker! And one with no taste, either!" I guess that thought is what led me to today's Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen People that I would Stalk....if I had Stalker tendancies, of course !

1. John Cusak - I should probably preface this by saying, I am John Cusak's #1 fan!! He is literally the man of my dreams....and has been for almost 20 years!! Since the day I saw him holding a boom box over his head, playing "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel for a girl in "Say Anything", I was hopelessly in love. He is the perfect man: gorgeous, intelligent, sensitive and funny! Even when he plays a psychopath or a hired killer, he's my man!!

2. Kiefer Sutherland - 24 has certainly made Keifer a big name, but I have been enamoured of him since the days of "The Lost Boys", when he played bad-boy Vampire David. It's not so much his looks either (although, I must say he is one FINE man)....it's his voice. Whenever Kiefer Sutherland talks, I go weak in the knees. So.....if I'm ever on a plane that is armed with a nuclear weapon taken over by terrorists who are working with bad members of our government and I need rescuing, I certainly hope Jack Bauer is there!!

3. Bono - The man doesn't even NEED a last name! There is nothing sexier than a man who can sing. When I was standing on the floor of the United Center in Chicago on the How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb tour and he sang With or Without You to me (hey now....a girl can dream right?) I actually had tears in my eyes. That man AFFECTS me. And he's a wonderful humanitarian to boot!

4. Trent Reznor - Ok...this one shows a little bit of my dark side. Trent is dark, gloomy and dangerously sexy. Another man that can sing. I've seen Nine Inch Nails live 6 times, and will probably see them on their next tour as well. So what if Trent thinks the end if near? We could spend it together, rocking the night away!! Old picture, but you get the point!

5. Gerald Butler - You may be asking yourself who?? But Gerald Butler is the Scot that starred as King Leonidas in "300". Talk about a hottie!! This man sizzles! If you haven't seen 300 yet, let me just clue you in. Gerald spends most of it wearing the equivelant of a speedo! I haven't seen a six-pack like that in ???? EVER! I actually liked him when I saw him as Dracula in "Dracula 2000". I know. Again with the vampires. But Vampires are SEXY!

6. Clive Owen - speaking of sexy foreigners, you can't forget Clive. Not only did he play King Arthur, he was in Sin City (such a cool flick), Closer and Derailed. He can be a tough guy, and yet, there is something surprisingly sensitive about him. Oh yeah. The accent. If you have an accent, you are already a leg up on the Americans. And good looking to boot?? Yep....I'm adding this Brit to my Stalker list!

7. Dave Navaro - Ok...so I have a thing for guys with Tats! What can I say? Dave Navaro is truly beautiful.....bad boy biker, guitar player extraordinaire, poker player, tattooed, and gorgeous. I'm in heaven!! I cried when Jane's Addiction broke up. But Dave has the staying power and will be around for a LONG time!

8. Daniel Craig - So he's not suave like Sean Connery, stiff like Roger Moore, or pretty like Pierce Brosnon. (There was another guy, but he was so forgettable, it's not worth mentioning!) This 007 rocks!! He's tough, edgy and looks hot in a tux AND A speedo. How many men can pull that one off?? Add another Brit to my list!!

9. Hugh Laurie - That's right. Dr. House. He's sexy. He's British. And he's so funny! The man has more snark than I do (and to those who know me, that says alot!) I'd stalk this guy any day of the week!

10. Matthew McConaughey - Oh my goodness....will you look at those dimples and those baby blues??? If that doesn't leave you in a puddle, I don't know what will!! He's adorable, has a cute little Southern accent.....and who can resist a man that smokes a little weed, and plays the bongos naked at 3 am???

11. Billy Bob Thornton - I know. This is probably a weird one. But I can't help myself. There is just something......dirty about him. And incredibly sexy!! I'm not sure if it's the tattoos that I'm attracted to....or just the eccentricity. Either way, I'd stalk this man in a hurry. I mean...what's not to love about a guy that makes Santa Claus a dirty name!

12. Adam Sandler - OK....granted. Not the most handsome man in the list. But I'm seriously digging the new Bob Dylan look. Suits him perfectly. Adam Sandler's personality just makes me want to hug him!! I love, love, loved the Wedding Singer. And he makes me laugh. What' s more important than laughter?? Should be very high on the stalkability list!

13. Paul Newman - My last name on the list. Is it weird that I want to stalk a man old enough to be my Grandpa? Probably. But Paul Newman is such a wonderful human being. And still a handsome old coot! Besides, I'm actually talking about the Ol' Blue Eyes, Long Hot Summer, Cool Hand Luke, The Sting, Butch Cassidey Paul Newman. He rocks my socks!

Well...that's it. I promise the next 13 will be about books. Since that's mostly what I'm about!

Later!
