Top 10 of 2006

Well....I did a quick count today of my "list" of books from 2006. I came in this year at a whopping 62 books. Now for those of you that put up 200+ numbers (uh yeah, Kelly, I'm talking about you and Marg!!), this might not seem like a lot. But for me....working full-time (and then some!) AND having 3 kids in activities, I think it's pretty good. I do plan on KILLING this mark next year, so watch out!!

Here is a list of what I considered the top 10 of all the books I did read. These are in no particular order:

  • Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
  • A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali by Gil Courtemanche
  • The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
  • One Thousand White Women: The Diary of May Dodd by Jim Fergus
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo
  • The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy
  • A Broken Vessel by Kate Ross
  • Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
  • Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult
  • Girl in the Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland

Also this year, I started a couple of really good series reads. I started the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum Books. So far, I've only read the first 4. They were great, but I didn't want to overdo it and burn myself out. I'd like to finish up that series this year. I also read the first book in the Hannah Swensen Mysteries by Joanne Fluke and the first book in the Victorian Mysteries by Robin Paige. I think both of these were good and would like to continue them this year as well.

Later!

Girl, you absolutely have a witness on Snow Flower and the Secret Fan! I read that per your recommendation and LOVED it! I've been circulating it around my circle of friends -- a book that good needs to be passed forward.

Hey Stephanie. 62 books! I don't know how many I read, but you ABSOLUTELY left me in the dust. You are my idol.

Holy Crow! 62 books! I don't think I came close to that. Oh well, I can aspire to it. Thanks for adding Book-a-rama to your list.

I didn't make 200. I had too many bad months this year, so I only beat you by, um, well a 100... and a few more... I am going to make 200 this year, but if I don't, I at least will clean off my to be read pile a bit...

I need to read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I own it... I own a few others on that list. More hours in the day, I tell you!

Oh, and I know you of course don't need anymore books to read, but for a good fantasy/teen book, you might try Cornelia Funke. I am reading her right now, Inkheart, you might like it. :)

I really enjoyed The Alchemist as well. It was one of my top reads in 2006. I have Snow Flower on my challenge list, and I can't wait to read it.

I loved Girl in Hyacith Blue and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Since you liked Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close you may really like the History of Love. It's one of my 2006 favorites.

Stephanie, it is definitely not too late to join the classics challenge. I haven't started on my books yet. There's two more I'm reading for book clubs before I can start on classics.

I forgot to mention in the last comment - please leave me a note letting me know when you post your 5 books. Thank you.

You're going to think I'm totally crazy! I was adding new people to the list and just got to your second comment, the one with your list. I'm not always this bad - sometimes I'm worse. Please be patient with me?

Great list, Stephanie! I loooove love love The Alchemist. It made my top 10 a few years ago and inspired me to move back to Texas and go to graduate school. Talk about a life-changer!
