Reading Slump???

Sheesh! I don't know what's wrong with me right now!! I think I'm kind of in a reading slump, or something. I just can't seem to get into anything right now! The books I'm reading are really good. I just can't seem to stick with them!! I am almost finished with Vivaldi's Virgins, by Barbara Quick. I will be posting a review for it soon over at Historical Tapestry.

I DID receive my book yesterday, from Graeme's Fantasty Book Review. You know...that book I WON! And guess what?? It was SIGNED! How cool is that?? I was pretty pleased. Maybe that will help me get out of this slump.

I also got a call from the library yesterday. Some of the books I had requested came in. So I tripped on over there to pick them up...and nabbed a few others before I got out of the door. Maybe THAT will help!! I got some good ones too!!

  • Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson
  • Dreams of my Father by Barack Obama
  • The Moviegoer by Walker Percy
  • Black Swan Green by David Mitchell
  • Alentejo Blue by Monica Ali
  • Flaubert: A Biography by Frederick Brown
  • Restoration by Rose Tremain
  • The Zahir by Paulo Coehlo

Now if those books don't bring me out of this slump, I may just have to resort to Vampires and Zombies!! May be the only way. What do you do if you find yourself in a reading slump? Do you ever find this a problem? Help!!

It does happen to me sometimes, and I think the best way to get out of it is to just give it some time - don't demand too much of yourself right now. Read as much a day as you feel like, and hopefully soon enough your enthusiasm for books will come back.

Out of those books, I've only read "The Moviegoer". I liked it a lot, but it did take me a bit to get into at first, so maybe it's not ideal for a time like this.

I love Bill Bryson! I've only read A Walk Through the Woods, but the Small Island one has looked great. I'm anxious to know what you think. Sometimes, our lives are just too hectic to be able to enjoy a book. I hope you find something that hooks you quickly. (Maybe the seventh Potter? Plus, I suspect you're right, regarding the comment you left on my blog.)

This happens to me sometimes, too. In fact, I'm sort of in a slump right now. My problem is that I have too many good books, and I keep jumping around. It's like I have no attention span at the moment, though I am liking most everything that I'm reading. Maybe it's just the summer heat making me distracted...

I love Bill Bryson, too, by the way--he's very funny!

As you know, I just posted this on my own blog. What I am going to do about it is just "mood read" for a couple of weeks.

I think I have been trying to stretch myself in regard to my reading and I have forgotten to just read for fun.

I hope we both break out of our slumps soon!

Know what you mean about reading slump. I get it from time to time, where I just get agitated and can't concentrate on reading anything.

But my worst slump lasted more than a year. That's when I first started working at the bookstore, and I was unhappy at work. The foul mood just creeps into books.

Then I realise you just have to back off and do something else - anything else. Sometimes you just have to give your mind a break. Books will always be there for you.

Try reading a children's or teen novel - maybe a graphic novel?

I'm in the opposite situation. I just can't find enough time to read but as soon as I have 5 mins I run to my book. I will review it soon but it hasn't been translated into English yet so I can't recommend it for now. I have moments like yours though sometimes, and the best thing to do is just give up and accept it. It'll pass :)

I find if you read too many books back to back this can happen. The worst is when you read a book or series that's so brilliant nothing compares for awhile

You can't go wrong with vampires and zombies. Have you read "The Traveling Vampire Show" by Richard Laymon? That would cure my slump. If I hadn't already read it already. :)

Again, can't wait to hear your thoughts on Black Swan Green- do that one first, please!!!

The Coehlo book makes me nervous though. I wasn't a fan of the Alchemist.

I think Erin has one good reason for a slump... when a book or series of books really grabs you for whatever reason, and you can't get them out of your mind.. it definately makes it hard to go on reading something new!

And yet other times it is like burn out. you read a long time and some really good books and suddenly the books you try to read just don't seem to hold your interest and you need a break.

Oh vampires and zombies sound like a good antidote to a reading slump :)
I'm not so much in a slump but I just seem to get two pages read and then something distracts me and etc. I feel like a need a good day of nothing but reading to get out of my slow mode.

A reading slump? I don't think I've had one of those since 1999, and then only because I was a senior in college with an art major.. with each art project taking 20+ hours each.
I do sometimes get burned out on a certain genre. But I love almost all of them, so I simply jump to a new one!

I feel where you're coming from (except with me I don't have time and because of that I'm getting impatient with the books that I'm reading because I can't get through them quick enough).

We all just need a little Harry Potter to get us out of that slump. :)
